It’s that time of year! I love spring break time because it usually lines up with my birthday, and even though I’m not in college anymore, this time always brings me back to those spring break memories I’m fond of, of traveling to a new place with new adventures. There was seriously nothing better than having a whole week off as an extra birthday gift.
Speaking of spring break trips, if you’re traveling this month or next, have you ever tried a capsule wardrobe when you go out for the week? It’ll save you suitcase space and makes packing task a breeze!
What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?
So what exactly is a capsule wardrobe, anyway? The concept is simple: these are items that are all interchangeable and pair easily among each other. And very importantly, items that you love and make you feel beautiful and confident. The benefits: you get tons of outfit options because everything goes together. And these outfits are your classic styles, something you don’t compromise, even away from home.
Genius, right? This saves you time in shopping and packing for the trip. And while you’re on the trip, this saves you time dressing yourself too.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not promoting a minimalistic suitcase! (This is not about how to pack 1 single shirt to wear for a 5-day trip, because if you’re boring, just say so! ha. But seriously, you can find that resource in a different blog). This capsule wardrobe is a guide on how to pack the things you adore the most on your next spring break trip and can make gorgeous outfits out of them. While being unapologetically feminine YOU! Saving space is just a cherry on top.
So let’s get to the steps on how to create your next Girly Spring-Break Capsule Wardrobe. This also assumes we are going to a fabulous sunny destination (a beach is a bonus).
Creating Your Girly Spring Break Capsule Wardrobe
Step One: Pick Your Outfit Formulas
These are the formulas that you feel most confident and beautiful in. For me, on vacation, the formulas I use the most are:
- maxi skirt + blouse
- midi/maxi dress alone, OR
- midi/maxi dress + light jackets/cropped cardigans
- one piece swimsuit + maxi skirt for coverup
- denim shorts + blouse (this is a rare formula I use because to be completely honest, I’m self-conscious about my big thighs. So I include it here for those who love shorts, but know it’s not my personal favorite).
With these outfit formulas, I’m prepared for all occasions while traveling, whether it’s beach time, or souvenir shopping time around town.
Step Two: Start Packing!
Go through each of the outfit formulas above, and find your favorite pieces.
Destination specific tip: If you have a special piece that is tied to the destination, please bring it! If there’s a time to wear it, it’s now. Bring that sweatshirt that says Beverly Hills if you’re going there. Bring a pastel color-block maxi dress if you’re headed for charming Charleston.
Another tip: If you want a lighter pack, pick pieces that can be used in multiple looks. For example: a white cotton maxi skirt will work for both a look with a blouse, and as a coverup with a swimsuit.
Also another tip: But if you have a vision for 2 looks with 2 different skirts, then pack the 2 skirts! I’d rather you love both your looks and look amazing in both, than packing only 1 skirt for 2 looks but feeling just meh! in both of them. If your husband complains about your luggage weight, feel free to to use that argument.
Step Three: Build Your Accessories
Now it’s time to layer on the accessories. Just because you’re on vacation, doesn’t mean you have to leave your beloved pink tassel earrings at home. Get your earrings, bags, shoes, and any other goodies you might want to bring! The little things can really bring together any outfit, so why not give it a shot? And don’t forget that beach hat to keep your face and shoulders from the sun.
Same tip as above, pack something that works with as many pieces you have in your suitcase. But again, don’t fret if you have to bring an extra pair of sandals that very specifically only go with a certain skirt.
Some accessories I suggest bringing for the girly girl: beaded or tassel earrings, packable beach hat, cute sandals for the beach/pool, comfy sneakers for walking around town, wedges or mules for dinner, a large tote for beach time, cute crossbody bag for shopping time (hands-free experience), and cute clutch for going on lunch/ dinner dates with the family.
Step Four (Optional): Snap a pic!
This is completely optional, but it saves you time pairing outfits on the trip. Snap some pics of yourself in a full length mirror at home, wearing each outfit with all the accessories and save them on your phone. So when you’re on vacay, you don’t even have to think for 2 seconds, you can just look at the picture and grab the style piece by piece.
I do this often before we go on trips. Some people (like my husband) will never understand the process. But girl, when the hotel only offers me a tiny mirror over the sink that my petite self can’t even jump high enough to see how my skirt works with the rest of the look, I’m gonna wish I could pack a full length mirror with me. But pics are easier than packing a full length mirror, so there you go!
Regardless of where you’re going, you already know that preplanning your outfits beforehand is a massive timesaver. With a capsule wardrobe, you’ll save yourself loads of frustration this spring break, both while you pack and while you party. Stay safe and stylish in your travels, my friend!
