Mother’s Day last year, I announced we were expecting. Mother’s Day this year, I’m fully a mother. I now have a 6 month old who laughs when I kiss her belly, pulls my hair just because it’s available, screams when she’s hungry and I love her with my whole heart. Crazy isn’t it?!
What’s crazier is the things I learn from observing her every day. Babies are interesting. They don’t do things and think the way adults do. They have so much to learn. And the whole process fascinates me. But the things I notice, I could learn a thing or two from my 6 month old.
1. Whatever you want, go for it!
When Lucy wants something, she’ll go for it. Her pacifier is across the crib. She doesn’t crawl yet, but she’ll find her way there to grab it. Maybe she rolls a couple times. Maybe she kicks her legs, lifts her butt, pulls the crib sheet from underneath her so she can push herself closer to the pacifier. She uses all the ways she knows how to get there, to reach for what she wants. She doesn’t complain that she can’t crawl, or that the paci is too far.
Lesson I learn: Whatever you want, try every way you know how, to get it. Make no excuses.
2. Take risks, everything will be ok
Babies are huge risk takers. Have you noticed that? They move and roll around in their crib, reaching, kicking, waving and not worry about a single thing. Lucy flips over and plays on to her tummy a lot these days. She lifts one arm to reach for some toys, then she lifts the other arm. Her head moves all over the place with her. And because of that, she bangs her head against the crib quite often. Sometimes it’s a small bump, it startles her but she moves on. Sometimes it hurts, she cries for a bit and then forgets. She hurts herself while having fun, while she learns how to crawl and be mobile. But it doesn’t stop her from doing it.
Lesson I learn: If you have a goal to accomplish, sometimes there are risks and it’s okay. If you don’t take risks, you’ll never learn.
3. You are amazing and it’s so exciting to be you
Lucy’s doctor told me to give Lucy the plastic-y mirror for her to look at herself during play time. It’s good to learn about her own awareness. And then as she got older, I also hold her in front of a real mirror so she can see herself. Every. Single. Time. She sees herself in the mirror, she lets out this huge excited squeal and starts kicking her legs, waving her arms, reaching for and smiling at herself. As if she’s saying “It’s so good to be me and to see me!!”. And then I remember how many times have I ever been this excited to see myself in the mirror. How many times have I complained about how bad I think I look, how I wish something of me was different. And here is my 6 month old baby, kicking and screaming in excitement because it’s just so amazing to see herself.
Lesson I learn: There’s only one you in the world. Not just accept, but be excited about who you are!
4. If everything else fails, take a nap
Lucy gets so mad at nap time. She won’t peacefully go to sleep like we do. Is this what babies do, maybe just mine? She kicks and screams, and puts up a fight, even though she’s very tired. Then falls asleep.
Lesson I learn: If everything else fails, take a nap!
Who would have thought the things you can learn from a baby? I understand these things will change as babies grow older. It’s a part of common sense and growing up. However, it’s important to take a moment sometimes and be reminded that we were born into this world with excitement, with determination to be amazing. Don’t forget that!
