This week Lucy Luu turned four. She had requested a Hello Kitty themed birthday. I’m glad she picked this theme because it was so much fun putting this 4-year-old birthday party idea together. Hello Kitty is a fun girls birthday party theme and I was lucky enough to be able to find many birthday decorations around the theme.
Today I’ll be sharing all the details of Lucy’s Hello Kitty birthday party in this blog post! From the birthday backdrop (that I made inspired by the chiara backdrop), to the flower holder centerpiece (also a DIY project inspired by Aglow Candles Co), to all the Hello Kitty birthday decorations and party favors.
We had most of the party set up in our backyard with food served buffet style inside the house. We also had a huge balloon garland for the front door with Hello Kitty welcome sign and Hello Kitty mylar balloon. I’m kicking myself for not taking a single picture of the front door installation. But these photos in this post will do for most of the party in the backyard.
Pink birthday party backdrop and gift table
Inspired by the recently popular chiara backdrop, I wanted the giant panels to play as a large focal point of the party. Ideally something taller than an average person.
So after watching a few YouTube videos and requesting a jigsaw for a gift, I was able to make these 2 boards to use as backdrop for Lucy’s party. The large one is 8ft tall, 4ft wide. And the smaller one to the left is 6.5ft tall and 3ft wide. I sprayed painted them 2 different shades of pink, and installed shelf brackets for legs. A How-to blog post to come soon.
Here are some options on Etsy if you prefer to purchase the backdrop instead of making them yourself: option 1, option 2 (fabric).
The Lucy letters wood sign was also a DIY project I cut from wood with a jigsaw. Here is an option if you prefer to purchase (the equivalent width would be 36″).
I then used this balloon kit to add small garlands onto the boards, using this balloon pump.
The number 4 (available in any number) pre-cut foam board frame is assembled using tape, but works better with a hot glue gun. I then used the small balloons from the balloon kit and glued them inside the frame. The frame is 3ft tall and taped to the smaller backdrop panel.
On the gift table, I taped a Hello Kitty mylar balloon that is 4ft in height ($7 each, I got two and set another one standing up at our front door).

Hello Kitty party favors
For party favors, I thought the idea of Hello Kitty plush toys was super cute. I found some from a website called KidsHOO.com. I do NOT recommend this website. And from reading reviews later on, I believe once you give them money you will not be able to get it back regardless if a mistake is made on their part.
(I placed an order for several things and most of them were shipped to me correctly. However, one of the items was of the incorrect size and when I contacted them to resolve the issue, we could not reach a solution. They refused to refund me the amount I paid for that item and instead requested I find something else from their store to replace the wrong item with. Or they would only refund me half of the money I paid for that item. I do not recommend this kind of customer service. But I digress.)
Regardless of bad experience, these Hello Kitty friends are adorable. I got some pink ones for the girls, and some blue ones for the boys. These plush toys are placed on the chairs at the kids table with 36-inch helium balloons tied to alternating chairs.
I also put Hello Kitty treats and tattoos inside the party favor bags and placed them on the table so each kid finds their own goodie bag as they sit down at their chair.

Hello Kitty birthday cake and Hello Kitty sugar cookies
The theme for the cake and cookies is … you guessed it, Hello Kitty! And mostly pink with rainbows and stars. These are homemade by yours truly. I have reserved time a few days ahead of the party to make the sugar cookies and the cake.
To be completely honest, I did rush through the kitty cake so it wasn’t exactly 100% what I wanted it to look like. But I think the details were cute and playful for a kids birthday party.
You can also place a custom order at your local bakery. I suggest Whole Foods for custom cake order. And @whippedbakery or @sugamesweetco if you’re local to Denver area for any custom cake and sweet treat order.

Centerpiece flower holders
As you can see this party has lots of DIY projects (the backdrop, the cake, the cookies). And one last thing I’d like to share is the flower holders as centerpieces for the adult tables. This was a quick project that took me an afternoon to do and with the fresh flowers, created some of the most amazing centerpieces I’ve seen!
In short, the centerpieces were inspired by Aglow Candles Co. You can purchase them here. I created these wooden holders myself with 8ft lumber ($15) and a drill. I then cut the 8ft into four 2-ft pieces but only used three for the three tables. More DIY details in this blog post.
For test tubes, I got these for $13 for a pack of 20 and used a total of 4 packs.
For flowers, I purchased fresh ranunculi (mix of white and pink), snapdragons (the tall white flowers), pink spray roses and white roses from a local flower wholesaler. We also cut a few white cosmos from my garden for the mix. My mother-in-law cut and arranged the flowers into the test tubes following the color theme of white and pink.
The various heights and sizes of the flowers, the wispiness of cosmos made these arrangements whimsical and magical. The water in the clear vials dancing in the sunlight was the prettiest.
Other Hello Kitty food and treat ideas
I didn’t get a chance to grab professional photos of the kids food. Here is a pic of the food table from my phone:

Table and chairs rental
For local Denver area, if you are interested, here are the rental details. I rent 8 kids chairs from Charming Chairs. The kids table (6-ft long) is rented from Party Time Rental. The peach gingham table cloth for the kid’s table is purchased here.
The adults tables are here. And I also rent white foldable chairs from Party Time Rental. The blue and white floral table cloths can be purchased here.
We absolutely had a blast. I loved seeing the kids enjoy themselves at their very own kids table and the Hello Kitty party favor plush toys were a hit. We cannot wait to celebrate Lucy with many more themed birthday parties. What was your kid’s 4th birthday party theme?
