The CDC has now suggested everyone to wear a face mask when you go out in public during the coronavirus pandemic. So by now, if you have been outside in public, you probably already have a mask, DIY or purchased. I have gone to the grocery store a couple times, and this is a quick DIY to assemble a face mask when I go out.
I love this method because it’s quick, it doesn’t alter your bandana. It’s still a bandana if you undo it. Multifunctional am I right? And it’s easy to just throw in the wash when you’re done. Bonus, you can pick your favorite bandana with the color and pattern to match your outfit!
This DIY is super easy! Once I got the technique, I can now do it under 60 seconds. All you need is a bandana and 2 hair ties (or 2 shoe laces). Optional: some paper towel of coffee filter for added layer.
Let’s get started!
This screenshot is from the CDC’s recommendations:
I follow these steps with some slight adjustments. I used a bandana that Kendra Scott had previously sent to me last fall. It is a square, and each edge is 21 3/4 inches. This dimension fits my face perfectly doing the below steps.
- Lay the bandana flat (with the pattern/print face down). I did this wrong in the image, the right side is facing up. But I adjusted after that. Optionally, you can add a piece of paper towel right in the middle (or a coffee filter) for extra layer of protection.
- Fold the bottom up half way.
- Fold the top down to meet.
- Fold the bottom up half way again.
- Fold the top down again to meet.
- Fold the left side over, and fold the right side over to meet half way.
- Lift each side and insert a hair tie. I find a stretchy hair tie works best. If you need something longer, you can also use a shoe lace or any string and tie it in place of hair tie. You should have 2 equal length strings on each side of the mask.
- Tuck one end to the inside of the other, to keep the mask together.
- Flip over and you have a finished DIY face mask! The mask should be wide enough to cover ear to ear and long enough to cover both your nose and mouth. You may have to play with how you fold the bandana a little bit to get the right size for your face.
(If you used a shoe lace, you should have 2 strings on either side of the mask. Tie one of two strings from either side to wrap around your neck, and the other string from either side to wrap around your head.)
And voila! You have a face mask in a minute or less! Hope you enjoy this DIY tutorial, tag me in your social post if you do this and post a picture. I’d love to see everyone’s mask!
Here are some fun cotton bandanas that you can make into face masks (call it a multi-purpose bandana!)
