Happy fall y’all! I decorated our small front porch for fall just last weekend and am loving the festive and cozy feels to welcome in a new season. Here are some of my decorating ideas for a fall small front porch.
Vary sizes and colors of pumpkins and mums
Isn’t it a cute idea to put pumpkins and mums on front door steps? If you don’t have much room on a small porch, cluster your decor down the steps is a great idea.
I like the idea of varying the sizes and shapes of pumpkins for interest. For our porch, I mix small pumpkins, medium size, and large size pumpkins. I also have a variety of white, orange, and green ones.
Some pumpkins are round, some are flatter. Some are the taller gourds with interesting shape and texture.
If you use garden mums, you can also vary their sizes. I like to keep the large mums by the front door, and smaller pots down the steps. But mix and match however you like.
I also have 2 different colors of mums: pink garden mums with white and yellow center, and yellow mums with orange center.
If you have a small porch, dress up the front door
I don’t have a large porch, so filling up the space in height (instead of in width) is another way to decorate. I layered fall garlands to wrap around the front door and used outdoor Command hooks to keep them in place.
This is what I used for fall garlands for the front door. These are are about 6ft long, $2.98 a piece. They’re thin garlands so I used a total of 8 to go around the front door. You can wrap them around each other to make them nice and thick.
Using a fall wreath for the front door is another great way to dress up the porch for fall. Together with the garlands, the wreath draw the attention upward, above eye level.
Don’t forget about the porch railings. It completes the decorations on different heights. Wrapping garlands around railings also doesn’t take up much space from your porch.
I used the same garlands that I used for the door here on the railings. 4 pieces on each side. Totally, with the front door, I used 16 garlands (8 on the door, and 4 on each side of the railings).
Add height with raised potted mums or bales of straw
For small porch and small door steps, using an elevated pot of garden mums is another great use of vertical space. I also took advantage of stacking hay bales and putting the pumpkins on top.
If you have a pot stand, put your potted mum on it. Or a garden stool. Small side table. Get creative!
Don’t forget cozy elements for the fall front porch
So far, we’ve covered festive elements. To complete the decorations for a fall front porch, add cozy details.
Some ideas I did: layering the fall outdoor rugs, I used the plaid check rug on the bottom, and layered a truck rug on top with matching plaid check detail.
A quick tip I might add for layering doormats is if you want to show off the pattern on the bottom rug, get one that is large enough so the top one doesn’t cover the pattern. Here, my top rug is 18 inch x 30 inch and the bottom rug is 28 inch x 43 inch. So I have 5-7 inches on either side of the bottom rug to show off the buffalo check on it.
We have some chopped up firewood from the yard. So why not use a firewood holder with these logs? It reminds me of a cozy campfire, and is the perfect cozy element I’m looking for.
You can also add an outdoor lantern for porch with candles in them. How cute and cozy looking!
Have you decorated your home for fall? I like to start with the front porch fall decor because the porch is the first impression of your home. The porch welcomes family and friends in and sets the mood.
Even if you have smaller porch, don’t be deterred to decorate with fall elements. Let me know what you think of these fall porch decor ideas.
