Ever since I was a little girl, my mother taught me the importance of taking care of myself. It was a privilege to watch and learn her beauty and hair secrets growing up. And I want to inspire and teach my daughter these same valuable lessons, especially with her hair routine. So, these are four hair care secrets that my mother taught me and I’m now passing on to my daughter.
Pre-wash brush to detangle hair
This is a simple tip and only takes a short minute. Give your hair a quick brush to detangle it before washing your hair.
My hair is long, so I hold my hair in small sections and start detangling from the ends first. This is so I don’t pull on my hair. Then I move up to the middle and finally finish detangling from the roots.
I use a soft bristled detangler brush for this to prevent any pulling and pain for my hair.
Know what’s in your shampoo and conditioner and pick the right ones for your hair
Every hair type is different and therefore has different needs. Just because a shampoo and conditioner work well for one person, doesn’t mean they will work the same for you. Know your hair type and what your hair needs.
Currently, I’m using Pantene Hair Volume Multiplier Collection with Bamboo for my hair routine. This Bamboo Collection was made to add fullness to fine or thin hair, and volume and fullness are exactly what my hair needs. You can check out this bamboo collection from Pantene at Target online.
Furthermore, make sure you get to know the products that you use for your hair. I learned that my scalp itches if I use products with parabens in them. It’s so important to me that the Hair Volume Multiplier Collection with Bamboo is free of silicones, parabens, dyes and mineral oil. This line is not only is what my hair needs, but also doesn’t contain the bad ingredients.
Now let’s get to this interesting ingredient, bamboo. Pantene’s Vitamin-B-rich bamboo is extracted from bamboo shoots, known as a symbol of beauty in traditional Chinese culture. Bamboo is also a natural source of B vitamins which support and strengthen hair. It also improves hair elasticity and shine because it’s rich of silica.
Wash from scalp to ends, and condition from ends to scalp
Your scalp is where most of dead skin, sebum and sweat build up. I use the Pantene Bamboo Shampoo to remove the dirt and oils while returning hair to natural fullness. As I wash, I start from the scalp and give it a good massage before moving onto other sections of my hair.
With conditioner, work the product in opposite of how you do the shampoo and start with your ends. My ends are the most damaged and dry so they need the most conditioner love. I use the Pantene Bamboo Conditioner to help nourish and strengthen my hair against damage, and protect its natural fullness. I start with the conditioner on my ends then I work my way up to my scalp and leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing it all out.
Use warm temperature water to prevent hair thinning
When washing hair that’s really dirty and oily, you can use hotter temperature water to open up the pores on the scalp to release any dirt or oil. But as you shampoo the second time, and conditioner, bring water temperate down to prevent the hot water from stripping away your hair’s natural oils.
For my regular washes, however, I do not use hot temperature as it can make my scalp dry and weaken hair roots. So, I use warm water most of the time to prevent hair from weakening and falling out but enough to still properly wash off dirt and oil. It feels so nice and relaxing with warm temperature water. Right?
I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to learn the beauty secrets from my mother. And even though Lucy hasn’t started washing her own hair yet, I’ve started teaching her these lessons as I wash and comb her hair. It’s something she looks forward to, just like how I loved spending time learning hair and beauty lessons with my own mother. What is your favorite beauty lesson you learned from someone who inspired your beauty routine?

You and your daughter are so cute. I didn’t realize that I should be conditioning from the ends to the scalp, I’ve been doing it all wrong this entire time. Thank you for the hair care tips!
